Energy

Promoting EU - India collaboration in Energy

Main facts:

  • There exists a large demand - supply gap with regards to energy requirements.
  • The availability of renewable resources is plentiful: India is well endowed with renewable energy sources like solar, wind, bio-mass materials, urban and industrial wastes and small hydro resources. The Indian government's target is to bring the share of renewable energy to 12 % of the total power capacity by 2012, i.e. one of the highest in the world.
  • Various sub-sectors are expected to drive the Indian renewable energy market:
    • Solar Energy: Market potential for processed raw material for solar cells, large capacity Solar Photo-Voltaic (SPV) modules, film solar cells, SPV roof tiles, inverters, charge controllers etc. Scope for R&D with regard to improving solar photovoltaic cells and solar thermal technologies.
    • Wind Energy: India is at the fourth spot worldwide in harnessing wind energy. Still there is vast coastal areas yet untapped.
    • Biomass Energy: 540 million tons of crop and plantation residues are produced every year, a large portion of which is either wasted or used inefficiently.
    • Small Hydro Projects: There is opportunity for small hydro power projects given India’s numerous rivers and their tributaries.
    • Energy from Wastes: Large potential exists due to rising piles of garbage in urban areas caused by rapid urbanization and industrialization.
    • Biofuels: A National Bio-fuel Policy, based solely on non-food feedstock, for creating new employment opportunities in rural areas, is on the anvil.
    • Clean Coal: With the bulk of power generated in India, from thermal stations using coal as raw material, the scope for clean coal technologies, both for mining and for upgrading low grade coals currently used is huge.

Opportunity for EU SMEs in rural clean energy:

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), GoI, is implementing a UNDP assisted Project for enhancing 'Access to Clean Energy'. The aim of the Project is to accelerate access to energy services particularly for increasing livelihoods of the poor and marginalized in the seven UNDAF states (Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh).
